BRIEF:

The client wants to create a new space in the existing building that they are situated in. They want to want to create a space where the innovative nature of the courses they offer come to life while retaining the building’s heritage features.

• A space for 30-40 people just for the design studio + 40 staff
• Signature branding within the interior for both Torrens University and Billy Blue College of Design
• Digital screen that could display student work.
• Individual modular pods that could become one.
• Merging the existing entrance with the new one
• Reception area that can become an exhibition space
• Walls that can move and shift
• Sound panelling over work areas, graduated frosting for privacy/ open plan balance
• Floor coverings to deaden noise, define spaces
• Planters
• Formal and informal meeting spaces

 

 

CONCEPT:

 

Billy Blue College of Design positions itself as an adventurous polestar in the design community and encourages its students to challenge convention, to design boldly, to think, make and connect. The role and purpose of Billy Blue is to deliver graduate outcomes of employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship.

The design concept for the new space focussed on keeping the same synergy of the existing level one and two to the ground floor, while maintaining the building’s intrinsic character of exposed brick work, wooden beams and the industrial feel. The ambience captures the clientele’s imagination, enticing them to become a part of this college.

The flow of the space is fluid with organic materiality that has been used to give that same synergy as level one and two. New opening has been made from the existing entrance to the entrance of the new reception area, which ties the existing space and the new space together.

A new entrance has been introduced from Mountain Street so the now the collage has two entrance. The new entrance showcases student work on the led screen and promotes the Billy Blue Collage. There is a lot of foot traffic which provides Billy Blue with a lot of exposure.

Overall the space created emphases a legacy and a contemporary environment that inspires and is experimental that communicates Billy Blue culture throughout.
